Un événement sans tapis rouge ni paparazzi, mais avec 200 cuisiniers de rue en lice et en sueur pour gagner **le titre de ** king of the pushcarts (« roi de la charrette »). Le vainqueur s’appelle Rolf Babiel. Installé derrière son stand miniature, à l’angle de la 5e Avenue et de la 54e Rue, cet immigré est-allemand, qui nourrissait déjà tous les patrons et les employés du quartier, a vu déferler du jour au lendemain journalistes, photographes et urbains branchés. « J’ai même reçu une lettre du maire de Chicago qui me proposait de m’installer dans sa ville, confie Rolf, mais je fais des hot dogs dans les rues de New York depuis 1981, alors plus question de bouger ! » Ses fans sont rassurés, tant ses saucisses de premier choix, coincées dans un pain croustillant avec des oignons caramélisés et une sauce curry maison, font l’unanimité. Et quand on le titille sur la paternité du hot dog, que se disputent Américains et Allemands, sa réponse est rodée : « Le hot dog est originaire de Francfort, on l’appelle d’ailleurs Frankfurter là-bas. C’est un immigré comme moi qui a apporté la recette ici, au XIXe siècle... » Au passage, ce sandwich ne serait pas le seul emprunt de la cuisine de rue américaine à la culture germanique. Le bretzel, invention d’un moine allemand datant du VIe siècle, et le hamburger, sandwich de viande hachée qu’on servait au XIXe siècle sur la ligne maritime qui reliait Hambourg aux Etats-Unis, sont des tranches d’histoire avant d’être des en-cas.................................... Les travailleurs qui vivent  loin de leur lieu d’habitation mangent leur repas dans la rue, les goûts les odeurs différents, les secrets de cuisine lie a sa façon de vivre, lié a l’intimité la cuisine dernier rempart de sauvegarde de l’identité.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On la surnomme «street food», comme si elle était l'apanage de la modernité alimentaire. La cuisine de rue est en fait une tradition séculaire répandue dans le monde entier.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La street food, un débouché professionnel, qui l'eût cru?&lt;br /&gt;Et pourtant... La Grosse Pomme est le plus grand restaurant à ciel ouvert du monde. Près de 7 000 vendeurs, représentant environ 150 nationalités, trimbalent leurs fourgonnettes et leurs chariots en Inox sur les trottoirs de la ville.
